Conservation Volunteer

Solihull Conservation Volunteers  are a small but dedicated independent practical conservation group, with charitable status registration number 1051563, that has been working for over 30 years.  It has no paid staff and is entirely run by volunteers in their spare time, members put in a total of over 1500 hours a year working on over 15 sites in the whole Solihull area.  The active Membership is approximately 25 with about 10 to 15 volunteers out on most tasks, the age range varies from late teens to over 70.  Most of the work carried out by SCV is on Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council owned sites and has helped in some of these sites becoming Local Nature Reserves and we work closely with the Borough Ecologist and other members of the council.  SCV has the ability to carry out a wide variety of conservation tasks from habitat creation like woodland management, hedgelaying and meadow cutting and access improvement tasks like pathlaying, sleeper bridge construction and replacing stiles with gates to improve disabled access.  The results of our work are enjoyed by thousands people a year throughout the Solihull area.  We have improved the access to a number of the sites as well as increasing the benefit of the areas for wildlife as well as the local community.  
SCV is open to all to join previous experience, skills or physical strength is not required and full training is given by the experienced volunteers.  SCV tries to recruit volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities and to carry out work all over the very diverse borough of Solihull, from the disadvantaged northern area to the more affluent south and from the urban areas to the rural margins.  Over the years the group has supported a large number of Duke of Edinburgh candidates to successfully get there awards, as well as school collage and university students.  Over the time that SCV has been working it has given well over 250 people the experience of carrying out worthwhile practical conservation work in their local area.
