Befriender to young carers

Closing for application: 01 Dec 2024

A highly rewarding role, befrienders offer friendly and positive support to young carers (aged 8 -17), getting out and about, meeting regularly and offering a listening ear and understanding.

Age: 18 - 90
When: Flexible
Where: Onsite

Details:

Be Free Young Carers are looking for positive volunteers who can provide regular support to young carers through our Befriending Service. These young people {between 8-17 years old} care for family members who have a long-term illness or disability.

Our young carers all currently live in Vale of the White Horse, South Oxfordshire and Oxford city. While not essential, having a valid driving licence and access to a vehicle would be useful in rural areas.

There is no typical Befriender, our Befrienders come from all walks of life – students, people working full-time, part-time, retired or not working – as long as you are over 18 and have some regular free time to commit. You will need to be a good listener, caring, understanding and have a level of perseverance and respect the confidential nature of being a Befriender.

All Befrienders are required to provide two references, allow us to carry out an enhanced DBS check, and complete our training and induction protocols.

There is no financial cost involved in becoming or being a Befriender. All reasonable expenses, such as travel and activity costs for both the Befriender and the young carer, are covered.

NOTE: THIS ROLE IS AVAILABLE ACROSS OXFORDSHIRE - The address is our office.

Be Free Young Carers also have other volunteering opportunities available throughout the year, to help with on one-off trips and fundraising events.

What is next?

All volunteers are required to provide two references, have an enhanced DBS check and complete our comprehensive training and induction. Further details available on request.
