Blog: The Enemy's Tom Clarke dishes the dirt
Yesterday we took some time out from our Astoria gigs to plant some trees in Stockwell. You’d probably think we’d be hanging out in some posh hotel room with booze and groupies, but we’ve recently had our eyes opened to the difference that volunteering can make, so when vinvolved asked us to do a job swap on one of their volunteer programs for the day, we thought why not? Hanging out in hotel rooms can get really boring anyway! We went down to some housing estate in Stockwell, where the residents don’t get to see much of anything pretty out of their windows. v have a program there where volunteers are planting Magnolia trees to brighten the place up a bit. I used to be a landscape gardener and I still like to bring a bit of green into grey spaces! We planted some trees and did an interview with 6 music and a few film crews and journalists who came down to see what we were up to. It was fun getting my hands dirty again with the lads.
It felt good to make a difference to the people living there. Volunteering at festivals is a great thing to do, I’ve seen the mess that people leave behind and without the clean up volunteers these big green spaces would be destroyed. There’s loads of other projects people should know about you can volunteer to do just about anything these days. People need to start taking an interest in what stuff they can do to help the environment. We’re going to headline a gig on the 30th April for vinvolved, we were really pleased to be asked to participate and raise awareness of what volunteering opportunities are out there.
