Volunteering at a summer school for children with disabilities
Liam, 16, volunteers at a summer school for children with disabilities. The project was set up by Emma Newton, 19, and funded through vcashpoint.
“I found out about the summer school through Air Cadets. Foresight, the organisation Emma volunteers for, came in and told us about it. All my mates were going on holiday for the summer and I was bored, so I went along on the first day and it’s been so good that I’ve been every day. “We do loads of different activities with the children, like sailing and archery, so I’m constantly learning new things. We went through a training programme about how to work with the children. I’ve got two younger brothers, so it’s just the same. The main things you need are confidence and a sense of humour.
“They’ve all enjoyed it, otherwise they wouldn’t keep coming back. If it wasn’t for this project they’d be sat at home. This way, they’re getting to try new things and it doesn’t cost them a penny. Emma’s put a lot of effort in. I think more young people should get funding to set up projects like this.
“I want to get into the Royal Air Force – it’s hard to get into, so I’m doing lots of sports and volunteering to help with my application. I’m doing my Duke of Edinburgh award, so the volunteering will count towards that.
“I want to carry on volunteering. This experience won’t go away from me.”
