The Brownie Guide promise is still a part of who I am!

Older People's Pub Lunches By Kathryn
At Brownies I learnt the Brownie Promise which started with the line, "I promise that I will do my best" and ended with the line, "help other people". I loved Guides so much that I became a Young Leader, helping give back what I got from the same experience.

Volunteering became addictive, especially whilst at University! It certainly was cheaper than drinking! I joined an organisation called HUSSO. It is a student run service that offers activities for people who are less fortunate in the local community. I went on daytrips with people with learning difficulties, and I ran an activity called "Older People's Pub Lunches".

I have met so many fantastic people whilst volunteering whom have made me re-think the way I do things for the better. I get a real kick out of volunteering and there is nothing in the world like it! It is so fun yet it is so challenging at the same time and I belive that one of my biggest challenging volunteering experiences was when I took adults with difficulties on holiday! Although at times it was stressful...I had the best holiday of my life! We learnt so many new skills and I dont think I have ever had so much fun in one week before and I know all of the other volunteers and paticipants would agree with me!

I had such an inspirational time that I decided to take my volunteering one step further and as I write this I am in a summer camp for adults and children with special needs in the USA and having the time of my life doing my best to help other people. It looks like the Brownie Guide Promise is still apart of who I am 15 years later!
