16-25s sick of negative public image
A survey shows that 70% of 16 to 25-year-olds say they are negatively perceived by the public – and nearly 60% say that this is unfair. They say it's down to a lack of understanding between different generations, and that the public is unaware of the good things that they do.44% of those questioned said they do positive things for their communities and 57% give or raise money for charities.
The survey of over 3,000 16-25 year olds found that nearly half agree that some young people do things which justify negative opinions, with many blaming celebrities like Amy Winehouse.
Over a third said their appearance gives them a bad image, but only 18% are willing to change the way they dress or talk to get more respect from the public.
Apart from more positive celebrity role models and media coverage, they believe the way to bridge the generational gap is for older people to listen to young people’s opinions and include them in decisions about their communities (41%) as well as find more opportunities to socialise and mix.
